THE EARTH SPEAKS TO US IN THE GRAMMAR OF SCIENCE, 2020

The Earth Speaks to Us in the Grammar of Science is an installation of 120 paintings that represent the total number of frost free days in Aspen in 2010-2018. This number has increased dramatically in the past few decades. From 1940-1949 there were only 70 frost free days and as the years go on this number increases. As each geometric painting represents a day, the colors gradually increase from white to deeper blues, signifying the snow melting to water. As the climate warms - Aspen is losing snow which is dramatically effecting not only the economy but the ecology of Colorado. This installation calls to the fact that scientific data is the way that earth speaks to us, and it’s our job to listen to this and respond through creative thinking. The geometric shape of each piece was directly inspired by the anatomy of a water molecule. The glossy and glittery glaze over each shape is inspired by studies that show deep rooted human attraction. Scientists have done studies that humans are intrinsically attracted to glossy objects, because of our inherent need for water.  Like temperature, the number of frost-free days has risen severely in recent decades, effecting water, land, and all of its inhabitants.

This installation is part of a group show, Tales of Water, at Skye Gallery Aspen. Curated by Ether Arts founder, Agustina Mistretta. Photography by: Brett Arnold Fox.
